From Waste to Foundations: UPH Civil Engineering Develops Eco-Friendly Green Concrete Using Palm Oil Waste
In a major breakthrough for sustainable construction, Universitas Pelita Harapan’s (UPH) Department of Civil Engineering has developed an innovative, eco-friendly concrete prototype. Traditional concrete production is notorious for its heavy carbon footprint but the UPH research team has successfully created a “geopolymer concrete”, a cleaner alternative that significantly reduces environmental impact. To make this green construction material even more sustainable, the team mixed in Palm Oil Fuel Ash (POFA), a byproduct that is highly abundant but often discarded as waste across Indonesia.
The inclusion of this agricultural waste does much more than just keeping it out of landfills, it actually improves the material itself. The chemical properties of the palm oil ash react within the geopolymer mix to actively enhance the concrete’s compressive strength, making it tough enough for real-world building demands. By transforming an unwanted industrial byproduct into a high-strength asset, the university is directly tackling the twin challenges of industrial waste management and the heavy environmental toll of traditional building materials. This breakthrough represents a proud step forward for UPH’s contribution to a circular economy, an economic system aimed at eliminating waste through the continual use of resources.
