UPH Students’ Coral Conservation Proposal Wins Program Kreativitas Mahasiswa (PKM) Funding
A group of biology, visual design communication, electronical engineering, and communication science students from Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) has successfully secured funding from Program Kreativitas Mahasiswa (PKM) – Video Gagasan Kreatif (VGK) 2025. Their idea combines cutting-edge LiDAR and soundscape technology to monitor and protect coral ecosystems more efficiently. Indonesia is home to one of the largest coral reef habitats in the world. However, many of these reefs are under threat due to human activities and climate change. Conservation efforts are often challenged by the vastness of the ocean and the difficulty of accessing deep underwater areas. To address this, the students proposed using LiDAR, a laser-based mapping tool that can scan the ocean floor and produce high-resolution maps, to visualize and monitor coral structures without needing to dive. In addition, soundscape technology is also used, which involves placing underwater microphones (hydrophones) to capture sounds made by fish and other marine life. These sounds help scientists assess the health of coral ecosystems and detect changes in biodiversity. All collected data will be made accessible through online tools, making it easier for researchers and conservationists to analyze and respond to environmental changes. This project represents a promising innovation in marine conservation, combining technology and biology to protect Indonesia’s precious coral reefs.
