Bringing Ocean Science to Life: Biology UPH Students and Lecturers Inspire Young Minds Through Community Service
In October 2024, Biology lecturers and students from Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) teamed up with Klub Ilmuwan Cilik (KILIK) to deliver an exciting community service project aimed at sparking scientific curiosity in children across Indonesia. The collaboration resulted in an educational video introducing the ocean ecosystem and a hands-on tutorial on creating a diorama of ocean life using everyday materials.
The video explained the ocean as a vital habitat for diverse marine creatures, including fish, coral reefs, and sea anemones, that interact with each other to form an ecosystem. Through engaging visuals and simple explanations, children can learn about how each part of the ocean plays a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity. To make the learning experience more interactive, the team guided viewers in crafting their own ocean dioramas using food boxes, paper, string, sponge, and stickers. This creative activity helped children visualize marine life and understand the biology of creatures like anemones, including their body parts, digestive systems, and ecological roles.
Beyond science education, the video also emphasized the importance of preserving ocean ecosystems. They remind students not to litter and to protect coastal environments. This initiative reflects the university’s commitment to integrating sustainability and environmental awareness into academic and community activities. By combining education, creativity, and conservation, this project showcases how science outreach can make a meaningful impact by nurturing future scientists while promoting responsible stewardship of our natural world.
