Smart, Sustainable, and Healthy: Campus Team Develops Solar-Powered Garden Bench
Lecturers, electrical engineering students, and design students have successfully developed a solar-powered garden bench prototype. This project is a creative and innovative blend of technology, health, and sustainability that has earned intellectual property rights in August 2025.
This innovative bench is equipped with a solar PV module that captures sunlight to generate electricity in order to power various features like automatic LED lighting and USB charging ports for electronic devices. It also includes a bicycle pedal system which allows users to burn calories while relaxing outdoors. To make the experience even more interactive, the bench features LED running text displays that show the number of calories burned and motivational messages. A built-in sound system is also placed to greet visitors and announce their progress, making the bench both functional and fun.
By combining renewable energy, health promotion, and smart design, this project reflects the university’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. It’s a great example of how students can contribute to greener public spaces and inspire healthier lifestyles. You can try this bench by visiting Electrical Engineering Lab Hallway (Near B-259 classroom) on the second floor of Building B UPH Main Campus!
